Elaeagnus - Oleaster
The genus Elaeagnus, together with the sand thorns (Hippophae), belongs to the oil willow family. Due to their
symbiosis with rhizobia (bacteria that bind atmospheric nitrogen), elaeagnaceae can also thrive on nutrient-poor soils.
Depending on the species, oil willows flower until late in the autumn. Their flowers contain a lot of nectar and attract numerous
insects. The fruits also serve as a food source for birds.
