Habit:
Small tree with round crown, 6-8 (10) m tall, 4-6 m wide, short or several stems, then more funnel-shaped; branches reaching up or outwards, twigs horizontally or upwardly bent, rarely arching; slow-growing, 20 cm in height and 15 cm spreading a year.
Flowers:
Up to 15 cm, feathery, cream-white, terminal panicles with delicate scent, reminiscent of lilac, decorative flowering, May-June, flowering for
10-14 days, only older specimens.
Leaves:
Late shoots, dense foliage, pinnate, ovoid, shiny dark green, bronze-violet to orange-brown or green when they fall off in autumn, grey winter buds.
Roots:
Deep to cordate roots with far-reaching, shallow extended lateral roots; sensitive to soil compaction.
Demands:
Sun to light shade, then with few flowers; extremely tolerant of heat and drought, moderately frost hardy; the extent of the frost damage
depends on the soil quality, good for urban and industrial areas, wind resistant but flowers are sensitive to wind.
Soil:
Best on well drained, gravely or sandy-loamy soil (neutral) alkaline to very alkaline, no clay, dry to fresh.
