Habit:
Loose and asymmetrical, medium-size to large tree, 15-20 (25) m tall, 7-12 m wide with light foliage, some with several stems, and forming runners; branches and twigs thorny, bent into zig-zags, horizontal to ascending, not overhanging; the first 10-15 years extremely fast-growing, 60-150 cm a year.
Flower:
When leaves shoot, white, fragrant, hanging racemes, end of May.
Fruit:
Brown husks, persistent all winter.
Leaves:
Late shoots, end of May to beginning of June; pinnate with elliptical leaflets, pale bluish green; falling in November, pale yellow.
Twigs:
With thorns, red-brown
Roots:
Deep and shallow rooting, possibly runner formation, sensitive to soil compaction, paving and flooding.
Demands:
Sunny location, resistant to heat and drought, tolerates urban climates, not sensitive to air and soil pollution, tolerates salt, requires wind-protected areas.
Soil:
Dry to fresh, slightly acidic to strongly alkaline, in all well-drained substrates, undemanding.
