Syringa - Lilac
The lilacs have long been popular. S. vulgaris was used in gardens in the mid 16th century. The triumphal march of the lilacs then began in the mid 19th century, when a number of new cultivars still available today were created. The lilacs are known for their colourful, usually pleasantly fragrant flower panicles, while the fruits are inconspicuous brown capsules without any decorative value. Their autumn colours are also modest.
