Habit:
Loose, medium-high tree, 12-15 (20) m tall, 4-8 m wide; loose crown; broadly conical, often multi-stemmed, branched to the base; stems occasionally bent and forked, branches horizontal, twigs gracefully over-inclined with nodding twig tips; medium-growing, 20-40 (50) cm a year; 12.5 m tall and 5 m wide in 20 years.
Fruit:
Small, only 1-2 cm large, brown, ornamental cones.
Leaves:
Short needles, shiny dark green above, white-striped underneath; two rows.
Roots:
Shallow and far-reaching, close to the surface, sensitive to soil compaction.
Demands:
Sun to semi-shade, sensitive to heat, likes cool, humid areas, frost hardy; sensitive to urban climates, prefers an airy location.
Soil:
Fresh to moist; sensitive to drought; acidic to neutral, chlorotic with higher lime content; on all sandy-humic to loamy substrates, avoiding heavy soils, no growth there.
Our tip:
Next to Taxus and Thuja the most pruning tolerant conifer, topiary possible.
