An exceptional fir, a small tree in Germany, 5-8 (10) m tall, 3-4 m wide; often with several shoots, nonetheless remaining slenderly conical with branches to the ground for a long time; loose crown when old, branches horizontal to ascending; slow-growing, especially the first few years, 7-20 cm a year

Long, dark green needles (actually needle pairs that have grown together), very attractive, unmistakable in the whorls around the twig. Roots Shallow, fleshy, not well anchored, thus sensitive to wind; sensitive to all kinds of compaction

Demands
(Sun) light shade to shade, sensitive to late frost, likes cool, humid areas, frost hardy
Soil
Fresh to moist, sensitive to drought, acidic to neutral, for sandy-humic or loamy-humic, nutritious substrates, not growing well in loam, where its sensitivity to frost is increased
