Betula - Birches

Betulaceae

Our Betula

In the temperate and arctic regions, there are 40-60 birch types that grow both as trees and as shrubs. Birches have beautiful bark colours. They have the following in common: Where the smooth bark is injured, blackish bark forms that will never disappear.

Birches are distinguished by their monoclinous blossoms that open before leaves shoot. The small female catkins look inconspicuous, while the male ones may be yellow when blooming. All birch species’ special advantage is their splendid autumn colouring.
