Cytisus - Brooms

The first colourful broom hybrids were cultivated over 100 years ago. Cytissus scoparius (Common Broom) and Cytissus multiflorus (White Spanish Broom) were the main species used. Now, there are more than 70 varieties with flowers in one, two and three colours. The most beautiful and long-lived ones are listed here. They resemble Cytissus scoparius in many ways.

Note:
The regular occurrence of frost damage is not important. The shoots have to be cut back anyway every year to increase
flower production. Pruning is done immediately after flowers wither at the lowest part of the flower base. This causes new
shoots to appear with luxurious flowers in the following year. Cutting the shoots hard back will delay shooting; if pruning was omitted in May, the shrubs are best left uncut - until the following year.
