Our Abies

Many of 40 fir species look fine in gardens and parks. Others are the giant trees of the earth. Fir trees are still highly appreciated as noble coniferous trees. They look magnificent and prominent due to their symmetrical-conical shapes.

Green needles make them particularly beautiful. Most firs have flat, slightly fragrant needles, usually dark green on the top, with two white stripes underneath. In some species, they are grey or blue-green on both sides.

Fir trees have inconspicuous monoclinous blossoms. Male and female blossoms are located on the same tree. Real fir cones are not easy to see, as they grow at the very top of the tree and only after a few decades.

Unlike spruce cones, not a whole cone falls down to the ground, but in cone scales, as soon as they are ripe. That is why you can see the beautiful cones on very few fir species, especially when they are still very young. Unlike spruces, the fir cones grow on the branches upwards.
Abies show they full beauty only if they have enough space to grow. This is especially important in gardens and parks.
