Aesculus - Horse Chestnuts, Buckeyes

Hippocastanaceae

Our Aesculus

Horse chestnuts are not related to sweet chestnuts as one might assume from the common name. There is only a certain similarity in the fruit - prickly fruit husk, brown fruit - that suggests such a relation.

Horse chestnuts have been known for centuries as splendid flower trees. They are a standard part of traditional European parks, avenues and large gardens. In some areas, they have become typical alongside maples and limes and indispensable despite their southern European and North American origins.
