Twiner/trellis climber, here 4-6 (8) m tall; (1) 2-4 m wide; numerous shoots, stake diameter up to 3 cm; fast-growing after three years, 50-150 (250) cm a year; later only medium-growing

Blossom

Usually monoecious, in racemes; females are crimson-brown, 2-3 cm; males pink, 1 cm, end of April to beginning of May; fragrant

(Semi-) evergreen; early shoots; five leaflets, elliptical, fingered, pale green; persistent in mild winters into spring; decorative, fine leaves

Fruits

Seldom, only in wine regions; crimson-violet, like cucumbers, up to 15 cm large, August to November; mushy when ripe, edible, sweetish
