Habit

Clump-like, symmetrical funnels, fronds spread out, one of the largest indigenous ferns

Leaves

Usually semi-evergreen, up to 40 cm wide fronds, coarse-leathery, shoots conspicuous orange-brown scaly, later glossy dark green

Demands

Light shade to semi-shade, shade possible but then fronds not so dense; cool, rainy, humid, frost hardy; wind protection needed for the fronds, which break easily

Soil

Fresh to moist, sensitive to drought, well-drained, humic, sandy or rocky loam.
