Habit

Extraordinary, dominant large conical tree; only a small tree here due to climatic conditions; usually only 6-12 m tall and 3-4 m wide, in wine-growing regions up to and over 20 m tall; branches arching downward, densely congested, increasingly asymmetrical with age; slow-growing as a rule in these parts, otherwise moderately fast-growing

Conspicuous cinnamon red, peeling from the stem in soft, stringy strips

Flat, like yews, coarse dark green needles, occasionally grey-green

Small ovoid cones, not especially conspicuous

Roots

Shallow roots, sensitive to soil compaction

Demands

Sun to shade, young specimens are especially tolerant of shade; likes warmth, sensitive to frost and late frost; only for temperate, rainy climates with extremely high humidity

Soil

Fresh to moist, very acidic to neutral; only satisfactory on somewhat nutritious, damp soil, long droughts are unfavourable
