Climate Trees – Trees for the Future

Climate change and the city – challenges for trees and shrubs

Rising temperatures lead to longer periods of heat and heat to drought. The increased frequency and intensification of extreme weather events such as heavy rain and storms or frost periods and late frosts also cause problems for the trees.
And this impact is even greater in urban areas. The things that a tree has to put up with: from road salt and dog urine to paving and exhaust fumes.
There are, however, suitable trees for every location. A deterioration in site conditions does not mean that no tree will grow there or, even more to the point, can thrive. . After all, there are many sturdy urban trees, that can cope better with climate change and the stress factors of the modern city. These are exactly the sort of trees we have planted in our grove of climate trees in our nursery in Hamburg.
We have put together a range of climate-change trees. You can find it at this link: climate trees

“With the grove of climate trees, we want to show how tree species classified as being potentially suitable for coping with climate change develop in the changing climate and give our customers, as well as all other interested parties, an opportunity to examine the trees in direct comparison.”

Bernhard von Ehren, managing partner

The grove of climate trees

A total of 70 tree species, with one specimen of each, are represented over an area of around half a hectare. They were planted according to the expected growth height, allowing concurrent subdivision into small, medium-sized and large trees, which in turn enables comparability with each other. The training of the trees is not planned, and the nursery will monitor

the situation in order to update the tree population on this part of the farm according to the latest research results. The 70 climate tree species include Taxodium distichum (swamp cypress), Nyssa sylvatica (black tupelo), Magnolia kobus (kobushi magnolia), Liriodendron tulipifera (tulip tree), Koelreuteria paniculata (goldenrain tree) or Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood tree).
